01What is Gunkanjima?
About 40 minutes by boat from Nagasaki Port lies Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island). This man-made island was created by reclaiming a reef during the time when undersea coal mines were thriving.
The island is characterized by its surrounding seawalls and dense high-rise reinforced concrete buildings. Its silhouette resembles the battleship “Tosa,” which led to the nickname “Gunkanjima.”
At its peak around 1960, about 5,300 people lived on the island, which spans only about 6 hectares, making it the most densely populated area in Japan at the time.
The island had everything needed for daily life—elementary and junior high schools, a hospital, a movie theater, and even a pachinko parlor—allowing residents to live entirely within the island.
02How to Visit Gunkanjima
To visit Gunkanjima, you must join a “Landing Cruise.”
Currently, five cruise companies operate landing tours at different times, and advance reservations are required.
